The Kulturecke

- Presented by IHS & IGHS -

Our market partnered with the Indiana German Heritage Society and the Indiana Historical Society in 2019 to bring our guests the Kulturecke! A fabulous space to explore Indiana's rich German-American history. German immigrants contributed in many ways to the state: business, education, architecture and even Christmas traditions. You might be surprised to find how many Christmas traditions originated in Germany and were brought to Indiana by German immigrants! The Kulturecke will allow you to explore the top 10 Christmas traditions you didn't know were German as well as other fun and informative facts about German influence on culture.

Take a virtual tour of the Carmel Christkindlmarkt Kulturecke!

New this year!

New this year, we’re inviting high school and college students to apply to be our Kulturecke Docent! This scholarship program is a fantastic opportunity to get involved with the Carmel Christkindlmarkt and bring history and cultural awareness to Carmel, Indiana. Sponsored by the Indiana German Heritage Society, the Kulturecke Docent will wear a special outfit, be present in the hut to welcome visitors, and provide helpful and interesting facts found in the Kulturecke.

The Indiana German Heritage Society is a statewide heritage organization founded in 1984 to commemorate the 1983 German American Immigration Tricentennial. The IGHS is dedicated to the exploration, discovery, study, preservation, sharing, and celebration of Indiana’s rich German heritage. The term “German” is not limited to Germany, but includes all of German-speaking Europe. The IGHS promotes German heritage through its publications, exhibits, student scholarships, conferences, participation in festivals, and awarding the title of Hoosier German American of the Year. The IGHS cooperates with other organizations, including the German American Klub, Palatines to America, Indiana Historical Society, Society for German American Studies, Friends of Wyneken, Athenaeum Turners, Carmel Christkindlmarkt, Athenaeum Foundation, Indianapolis-Cologne Sister City Committee, and many more. We welcome you to join the Society. Among other activities, IGHS members are invited to participate in a monthly Stammtisch program at Das Deutsche Haus–Athenaeum in Indianapolis. The program includes dinner, conversation, and a presentation by a guest speaker regarding topics of interest to German Americans. Members do not have to be German and we look forward to your application.
